Growing Zones
For a showy shrub that remains compact, check out this Grin and Tonic Hydrangea. Displaying lime green blooms that fade to white as they age, this Hydrangea macrophylla will keep blooming all summer long. Furthermore, with its condensed form, it grows to no more than 3 feet, which makes it suitable for a variety of uses. Lovely dark green foliage helps the striking blooms to stand out.
Originally from parts of East Asia, the Grin and Tonic Hydrangea develops a naturally rounded habit and can be grown in hardiness zones 5 through to 9. Remaining small, this hydrangea is perfect for growing in the middle of a border, lining a pathway or in a large container.
Grin and Tonic Hydrangea Care
The Grin and Tonic Hydrangea is happiest when given partial shade and protected from the glaring afternoon sun. It prefers moist, yet well-drained soil, so any sites prone to waterlogging should be avoided. To encourage this shrub to bloom all summer, you can apply a general fertilizer in spring or early summer. Hydrangeas do not like the ground to completely dry out, so it is best to aim for a consistently moist soil.
As the flowers fade, you can deadhead them to tidy the plant and spur more flowering. An annual mulch of organic matter will help conserve moisture over the hotter months.
Grin and Tonic Hydrangea Spacing
When fully grown, the Grin and Tonic Hydrangea can reach a size of 2 to 3 feet tall and wide. When planting this hydrangea in a group for maximum impact, you can space the plants around 3 feet apart.
