Growing Zones
For an attractive, weed-suppressing groundcover, the Hancock Snowberry could just be the answer. Botanically known as Symphoricarpos × chenaultii 'Hancock', this snowberry shrub forms low-growing branches that are covered with small blue-green leaves. However, it is the pink flowers in spring and later white-and-red, speckled fruits that will draw your eye. Hancock Snowberry is tough and easy to grow.
Highly adaptable, the Hancock Snowberry can cope with pollution, drought and any roaming deer. It is cold tolerant and well suited to growing in zones 4 to 7. It has a low growth habit, but can spread to around 6 to 8 feet wide. This snowberry is ideal for providing a dense groundcover or growing on a bank to control erosion.
Hancock Snowberry Care
The Hancock Snowberry grows well in full sun to partial shade. It prefers a moist and fertile soil and can even tolerate poorly drained substrates. Water well on planting and until a good root system has developed. Although Hancock is not a heavy feeder, you can apply a balanced granular fertilizer in the spring.
Flowers and fruiting can be encouraged by cutting branches back to around 12 inches in spring. The fruits are not safe for people to eat, but will provide food for the birds during the colder months.
Hancock Snowberry Spacing
With its low and spreading form, the Hancock Snowberry can reach a height of 1 to 2 feet and spread of 6 to 8 feet. If planting en masse, you can space each shrub around 6 to 8 feet apart.
