Hass Avocado Tree brings creamy, rich flavor and a lush, tropical look to patios and backyards alike. This powerhouse producer bears the classic, pebbled-skin avocados loved by chefs and home cooks for guacamole, toast, and everything in between. Compact enough for large containers yet vigorous in the ground, it rewards steady care with generous harvests.
Expect glossy evergreen foliage, fragrant blooms, and fruit that matures on the tree and softens to perfection after picking. Grow one as a statement in a sunny spot, pair it with a complementary pollinizer for bigger crops, or keep it container-sized and roll it indoors before hard frost.
Hass Avocado Tree Care
Provide 6–8+ hours of direct sun. Plant in fast-draining sandy or loamy soil; target pH 6.0–7.0 and avoid waterlogged sites to prevent root rot. Water deeply when the top 2 inches of soil are dry; keep evenly moist during the first 1–2 years, then reduce frequency as roots establish. Mulch 2–3 inches deep, keeping mulch 4–6 inches from the trunk. Feed lightly in spring and early summer with a citrus/avocado fertilizer containing micronutrients; pause feeding in late summer and winter.
Prune in late winter or after harvest to shape and control height; tip back long shoots and remove crossing or damaged wood. Outdoors, Hass is best in Zones 9–11; protect from frost, as young trees are tender below about 30°F. Self-fruitful, though a nearby Type B avocado can increase yields.
Hass Avocado Tree Spacing
Specimen: allow 15–20 ft of width and plant 15–25 ft from buildings, hardscape, pools, or septic lines for canopy and root clearance. For two trees to improve pollination, space 15–20 ft apart. Screen: space 10–12 ft on center and tip-prune for density.
Containers: start with an 18–24 in diameter pot (at least 16–18 in deep) with large drainage holes; use a coarse, well-draining mix and elevate the pot on feet for airflow. Place outdoor containers 2–3 ft from a sunny wall for warmth and air movement; in cold regions, move indoors before nights drop below 40°F and provide bright light.
