The Heart Fern is a tropical plant with beautiful, glossy, green leaves. The heart-shaped fronds look afloat on their dainty black stems. It’s native to southern Asia and has become very popular at nurseries and garden stores. This plant loves high humidity and is ideal for terrariums. Other names for this plant include Tongue fern, Heart Leaf fern, and Heart’s Tongue.
Best Locations For Growing Heart Fern
The Heart Fern is a perfect plant for a terrarium or ‘fairy garden’. It will need a warm, moist environment to thrive. To boost humidity, consider placing your Heart Fern in a bathroom or near the kitchen sink. You could even put it under a glass dome for an elegant look.
Heart Fern Requirements
The Heart Fern requires indirect sunlight. In nature, it’s found in partial shade under the forest canopy. Avoid bright, direct sunlight with this plant as it may scorch the leaves.
Heart Fern Care
Maintain a high humidity level and moist (not soggy) soil for best results with this fern. Its soil should be fast draining but able to retain moisture.
Watering Heart Fern Plants
This plant is susceptible to root rot so make sure it isn’t sitting in stagnant water. Water when the top inch of soil is dry, about every week. In a terrarium, the Heart Fern might need watering every two weeks depending on how high the humidity is inside the enclosure.
Feeding Heart Fern Plants
Ferns such as the Heart Leaf do not need frequent fertilizing. Use a general-purpose fertilizer for houseplants at half the recommended strength of the manufacturer.
