Bring joy and love to your space with the stunning heart-shaped leaves of this tropical foliage plant. The cherry red leaf centers go darker red as they age. Each leaf is bordered in green. It has an upright habit that grows 15-20 inches tall. ‘Heart’s Delight’ loves morning sun and afternoon shade. Caladiums that can be grown in sun or shade are known as strap leaf caladiums.
Caladiums are native to the Amazon River Basin, so they tolerate heat and love humidity. You can plant them in landscape borders and in containers. Grow ‘Heart’s Delight’ with ferns in a hanging basket for a stunning effect. In its role as a thriller, plant it with impatiens, ferns, and begonias in a combination container.
Heart to Heart® Heart's Delight Caladium Care
Fertilize with ¼ to ½ strength every two weeks. Bear in mind that too much fertilizer will cause the leaves to become greener. No deadheading or pruning is needed. Keep the soil in pots moist; if they dry out, the leaves will turn yellow and drop. In the landscape, this tropical plant likes soil that is at least 60-70 degrees F. In the Northeast it is probably best grown in a container placed in a sunroom or on a warm patio.
‘Heart’s Delight’ makes a great houseplant. It likes bright light or a sunny window. Your outside caladiums can be overwintered by digging and storing the tubers before frost. Store the tubers at 60 degrees F. or warmer. Note: this plant is toxic, so keep it away from children and pets.
Heart to Heart® Heart's Delight Caladium Spacing
Space this caladium 8-10 inches apart. Grow several cultivars together in a landscape bed or in a large container.
