Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium hortulanum is sure to provide a rainbow of colors to your summer garden! Large, heart-shaped leaves are blushed with burgundy and speckled with pale pink. The leaf margins are tinged green, contrasting with the deep indigo veins. This easy-to-grow annual grows 15-20 inches tall and 8-10 inches wide with an upright, mounded form.
Native to forests of South America, this plant looks great when planted with other colorful annuals for a tropical-inspired look. Use Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium in containers as a thriller. This caladium is also excellent in mass plantings and mixed borders, where its vibrant leaves can complement other foliage and flowering plants.
Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium Care
Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium grows best in warm, humid climates. Plant it outside when temperatures are consistently above 50-60°F and soil temperatures are around 70°F. Mulching can help maintain soil temperature. This caladium is adaptable to a variety of light conditions, growing well in both full sun to full shade. Moist, well-drained soil is best, as caladium does not tolerate heavy clay or poorly drained soils. Water this annual often to keep the soil thoroughly moist but not soggy. Caladium can benefit from an application of all-purpose fertilizer diluted to at least half strength every 4-6 weeks in summer.
Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium can be grown as a perennial in zones 10-11. In colder regions, this caladium can be grown indoors with bright, indirect light. Caladium grows exceptionally well in containers – just be sure that the container is sufficiently watered.
Caladium will enter a dormancy period in which the leaves die back to the plant. When this happens, reduce watering until new growth appears. When conditions are right, caladium may produce a flower – a white spadix surrounded by a green spathe. Remove flower spikes if you desire to divert more energy into foliage production.
Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium Spacing
Plant Heart to Heart® Rain or Shine Caladium 6-12 inches apart from other plants, with the lower end of that range being ideal for mass plantings. When growing this annual in containers, select a pot that is at least twice the diameter of its tubers. Grow it in a larger pot to allow room for a mixed container planting.
