Heart to Heart™ Scarlet Flame Caladium (Caladium hortulanum) has elegant, bright red foliage built for shade from spring to early fall. Scarlet Flame is a strap leaf caladium with elongated leaves and ruffled edges for a delicate touch to your garden and container plantings. Foliage is deep red with speckles of pink and white and a green border. Great color for shade and is adaptable as a houseplant. The heart shaped leaves have an upright mounding habit growing to a mature 18 inches in height and up to 10 inches in width.
Scarlet flame is heat tolerant and has no real disease of pest problems. Plants have an upright mounding habit that make them ideal as a thriller plant in containers and used as a border plant or in mass plantings in the landscape. Caladiums grow well in both sunny and shaded locations. They can also be grown indoors as a houseplant with bright light or in a sunny location in the house. Mix in your landscape beds for a colorful leafy addition. They grow best in USDA hardiness zones 10-11.
Heart to Heart® Scarlet Flame Caladium Care
Scarlet Flame prefers to be grown in full sun to partial shade locations and are heat tolerant. In extreme heat with extended drought, water regularly to keep the soil moist, but not wet. Caladiums prefer well-drained soils and do not tolerate temperatures below 50 degrees. If planting tubers, place pointed end facing upwards, so the tuber is about 2” below the soil level, the roots form on the top of the tuber , so you need to plant them deep enough that roots have room to grow. If your plants are already growing in pots when you purchase them, plant them about ½” deeper when you transplant them. Fertilize at ¼- ½ strength as you normally do for annuals and perennials every other week.
Caladiums are highly adaptable as indoor houseplants in a warm, humid, sunny place. Do not over water as tubers can be susceptible to rot. Frequent misting will help increase humidity too. Make sure pots are well drained.
Heart to Heart® Scarlet Flame Caladium Spacing
When grown in mass or used as a bedding feature, plants should be spaced approximately 10 inches apart. Otherwise, spacing should be set at 8-10 inches apart in containers and hanging baskets.
