Heart to Heart White Wonder (Caladium hortulanum) are grown for their startling white heart shaped leaves. This plant will grow in sun or shade but cannot manage a hot southern exposure or the leaves will burn.
White Wonder is native to Central and South America. They are only hardy to zone 9, so are usually grown as an annual. However, they make a nice house plant if placed in a bright or sunny window. Outside, they make a nice border or a thriller in a mixed container. Heart to Heart White Wonder love heat and humidity.
Heart to Heart® White Wonder Caladium Care
Outdoors, White Wonder Caladium should be planted only after the soil is 70 degrees F or more or they will rot or be stunted. Since they are grown for foliage, no deadheading is necessary. Heart to Heart White Wonder needs only 1/4th the amount of fertilizer you would give following annuals every week or two weeks. Always keep the soil moist. If the plants dry out, they drop their leaves.
Indoors, water and fertilize as you would outdoors. Place the Heart to Heart White Wonder in a sunny window or in bright light. To keep the area humid, mist the plant regularly or place a saucer that is full of pebbles under the plant. Fill the pebble tray with water that is less than the top of the pebbles. As the water evaporates, it creates a humid atmosphere around the plant. Fill the tray when it gets low.
Heart to Heart White Wonder is a perennial in hot climates. It will die off during the winter in cooler climates unless moved inside until the outside soil warms up. Heart to Heart White Wonder is toxic to dogs, cats, and horses. Take your animal to the veterinarian if it eats this plant.
Heart to Heart® White Wonder Caladium Spacing
Heart to Heart White Wonder is a medium plant with a height of 15-20 inches tall. It spreads out 8-10 inches wide, so plant it 8-10 inches from other plants.
