Blanket Flowers are beloved by gardeners who live in climates with hot, dry summers. Why? They’re tough as nails, thrive in a variety of soils, bloom all season long, and tolerate both heat and drought like a champ. Plus, bees and butterflies love their sunny flowers. The Heat it Up® Yellow variety is an award winner that only improves upon an already top-notch North American native.
Heat it Up® Yellow Blanket Flower lights up gardens and containers in full-sun locations. It won’t bat an eye at the hottest days of the summer, either. It blooms when other flowers are shrinking from the heat. The mounded growth habit and profuse yellow flowers are a colorful “filler” plant for containers and hanging baskets. They are also a great addition to native landscapes, wildflower gardens, and pollinator gardens.
Heat it Up® Yellow Blanket Flower Care
The hardy blanket flower doesn’t need much, especially when planted in the ground. It does best in well-drained, moist soils but can handle occasional drought. It also does well in dry, poor soils. If you have your Heat it Up® Yellow Blanket Flower brightening containers or baskets with its brilliant yellow flowers, you will need to water them whenever the first inch of soil is dry to the touch. A little bit of fertilizer can go a long way with this efficient native. Plant your blanket flowers in a full-sun location for best results.
Deadheading will prompt the plant to rebloom and is a good habit to get into with a tissue-like double bloom. Keeping the soil clean of debris will go a long way to preventing soil borne diseases. Dead or yellowing leaves should be removed immediately as well to keep from attracting insect pests. No pruning beyond the good housekeeping is needed to keep this plant beautiful.
Heat it Up® Yellow Blanket Flower Spacing
Heat it Up® Yellow Blanket Flower has the potential to spread up to three feet, but usually only needs about 18” of space in the garden. Container-planted blanket flowers can use about 10” of space between plants.
