- Rare Low-Maintenance Tropical Plant
- Light Preference/Tolerated (Bright Indirect Light)
- Average Watering Needs
- Mature Height 24-48 inches
Alocasia Hilo Beauty has a random variegation pattern that could be called jungle camouflage. The deep green broad leaves are held up by almost black stems making this tropical bulb a dramatic addition to your houseplant collection. Alocasia Hilo Beauty grows outdoors in containers and in the garden wonderfully. Plants growing in zones 9-11 can be treated as perennial bulbs and left outside for the winter. Alocasia growing in the rest of the hardiness zones must be brought inside before the nighttime temperatures fall to 50 degrees F.
Best Locations For Growing Alocasia Hilo Beauty
Hilo Beauty can be used as a focal point in a room or as part of a larger display. The leaves can reach 3-4 feet tall and look best as a backdrop for smaller tropical plants. Alocasia has a sap that can irritate the skin and should not be placed in a child’s room or where a pet could chew on the leaves.
Alocasia Hilo Beauty Sunlight Requirements
Hilo Beauty requires indirect bright light when grown indoors, such as in a southeast-facing window or across from a south-facing wall. Direct sun exposure can burn the leaves. Alocasia growing outdoors for the summer should be placed in a semi-shaded spot or somewhere that has dappled shade, such as under an arbor or on a patio with shading.
Alocasia Hilo Beauty Care
Alocasia needs to be potted in rich, evenly moist soil that drains freely. Add worm castings and compost to enrich indoor potting mix. The growth rate for Hilo Beauty is fast, and tubers can be divided every two years.
Watering Alocasia Hilo Beauty
Caladiums appreciate consistent watering so that the soil never fully dries out. In the summer, when the tuber is actively growing, you may need to water every 2-3 days. Always feel the soil before watering. If it's moist, hold off watering for a day or so. The need for water slows down in the winter when the tuber rests.
Misting the leaves with water every 1-2 days in the winter will help keep humidity levels higher for Alocasia.
Feeding Alocasia Hilo Beauty
Caladiums are hungry plants and need regular fertilizing during the spring and summer when they put on most of their growth. Use an all-purpose indoor plant food with a 10-10-10 ratio of macronutrients, N-P-K. Apply the fertilizer at half strength every 3-4 weeks. A water-soluble fertilizer is the easiest to use for potted plants. In the winter, feedings can stop until new growth resumes in the spring.
