The Polka Dot Plant has made its name as a striking and low-maintenance foliage plant that catches the eye with vibrant color contrasts. The Hippo® Rose Polka Dot Plant is an award-winning variety with deep pink and green foliage. This stunning combination steals the show in any planting. Native to Madagascar, polka dot plants are easy to care for, require less than six hours of sunlight, and are adaptable as houseplants.
The Hippo® Rose Polka Dot Plant grows up to 22” high, with a spread of 14”. The size, combined with its upright, bush habit, make it a perfect “filler” for containers. Combine them with upright grasses and flowers, and chartreuse spillers for a big-impact design. Or plant with bright annuals, hostas or vines in a shady garden for instant contrast and visual interest.
Hippo Rose Polka Dot Plant Care
Polka dot plants are native to warm climates, so grow them as annuals in your containers or garden beds. They are easy to take care of, but do require the top two leaves to be pinched back on a regular basis to promote a more bushy growing habit. The plant will bloom from time to time, and you can trim off the blooms to encourage the plant’s energy to remain focused on foliage growth. Water your plant any time the top 1” of soil is dry to the touch, and fertilize once a month.
Polka dot plants are also happy indoor plants, so bring your plant indoors before the first frost if you have the perfect spot to enjoy it. Bright, indirect light is necessary to keep the plant healthy. It will also want to stay quite warm, with an ideal temperature between 70-80°F. They also prefer a humidity level of at least 50%, so keep your polka dot plant on a pebble tray, or spray them every day to maintain moist conditions.
Hippo Rose Polka Dot Plant Spacing
Plant your polka dot plants up to 10” apart when in the ground, and 5-6” apart when in a container. If planting with other annuals, use a larger container to allow room to grow, and place it in a shady place when grown outdoors.
