For that special something that transports shady combinations from ordinary to unforgettable, look to this Polka Dot Plant, Hippo White. We don’t know why it’s named “Hippo”, since we’ve yet to see a polka-dotted hippo, but it’s every bit as charming as the hippos we’ve met.
This one is all about the foliage, but what foliage! Sporting splashy cream variegation that somehow goes with everything, this Hypoestes phyllostachya adds some fun to shady pots, beds, and borders as an upright filler, and can keep you company indoors in cold winter climates.
Hippo® White Polka Dot Plant Care
This easy-care Hypoestes was made for the shade and likes full- to part-shade locations best. It’s heat-tolerant, so it’s a great option for places with steamy summers. Average soil and moisture needs make it easy to find a spot for this adaptable stunner. If desired, pinch growing tips for fuller growth.
Hippo® White Polka Dot Plant Spacing
Hippo White tops out at 16-22 inches and spreads about 8-14, so a spacing of 6-12 inches apart is recommended.
