Winter Fiesta Wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens 'Hokutotakaji-001') steals the spotlight with glossy, deep‑green foliage that hugs the ground at just 4–6 inches tall while spreading up to 30 inches. Delicate white bells appear in late summer, quickly followed by extra‑large berries that start ivory and blush to cotton‑candy pink as temperatures drop—an eye‑catching contrast against snow or mulch. This compact native forms a dense mat, perfect for edging shady beds, underplanting shrubs, or spilling from winter patio containers. Compared with standard wintergreen, ‘Winter Fiesta’ offers larger, longer‑lasting fruit and a showier cold‑season display.
Live Holiday Winter Fiesta Wintergreen brings an authentic woodland feel indoors when many decorations are plastic. Place a berry‑laden pot on the mantel or entry table and you’ll enjoy gentle wintergreen fragrance plus living color that lasts through the holidays. After festivities, the plant transitions outdoors in early spring, giving the recipient an evergreen ground cover that supports pollinators and songbirds. Re‑using one cheerful plant year after year also cuts down on disposable décor and gift waste.
Holiday Winter Fiesta Wintergreen Care
Indoors from November through February, keep the pot in bright, indirect light and maintain cool room temperatures around 60 °F. Water when the top half‑inch of soil feels barely dry; consistent, evenly moist (not soggy) mix prevents berry drop. Skip fertilizer during winter dormancy and mist foliage occasionally to counteract dry indoor air.
When night temperatures rise above 40 °F, harden the plant off on a shaded porch for a week, then transplant it to the garden. Choose humus‑rich, acidic soil (pH 5.5–6.5) that drains well, and tuck the root ball so the crown sits level with the ground. Space clumps 18–24 inches apart for a seamless carpet. Mulch with shredded leaves to lock in moisture, and water weekly the first season; thereafter, rainfall is usually enough except during prolonged drought. Light annual pruning after berries fade keeps the colony tidy and encourages fresh, red‑tinted new growth next winter.
