Honey Bear is an excellent acorn squash that is easy to grow and delicious when baked.
Honey Bear Acorn Squash Plant Care
Honey Bear is suitable for planting out in late spring or early summer once all risk of frost has gone. Best grown in full sun, it can tolerate some partial shade but fruits may ripen slower. Being a heavy feeder, this acorn squash should be grown in fertile soil that is free draining. Honey Bear develops a bushy habit and should be spaced 3-4 feet apart to allow air circulation between plants.
Growing Honey Bear Acorn Squash
The Honey Bear’s fruits can generally be harvested after 85 days and are well worth the wait. Growing to around 2 feet high and 4-5 feet wide, this squash needs to have room to mature. If growing this acorn squash from seed, seeds can be sown directly in early summer or started indoors 3-4 weeks before the final frost.
Acorn squash can be grown in large containers, at least 24 inches in diameter to hold enough soil to support the plant. Make sure the pot’s soil doesn’t dry out, which can happen surprisingly quickly during the summer.
Watering Honey Bear Acorn Squash
For healthy and uniform fruits, keep the soil consistently moist over the growing season. When watering, it is advisable to avoid splashing the foliage to help prevent disease.
Feeding Honey Bear Acorn Squash
Being a hungry plant, the Honey Bear Acorn Squash will benefit from extra fertilization. Apply a potassium-rich liquid feed every two weeks once the flowers begin to set.
