The Hot Wings™ Tatarian Maple is a small ornamental tree that adds bold color and striking charm to any landscape. Famous for its brilliant red samaras (winged seeds) that look like tiny “hot wings” in summer, this tree also provides silver-green foliage in spring and summer that transforms into fiery shades of orange and red in fall.
With a compact size of 15–20 feet tall and wide, it’s an excellent choice for smaller yards, front landscapes, or as an accent in larger garden designs. Hardy, adaptable, and low maintenance, it’s a standout tree that delivers four-season interest.
Hot Wings™ Tatarian Maple Care
Plant in full sun to partial shade for the best color and canopy growth. This maple thrives in well-drained soils but adapts easily to clay, loam, or sandy conditions, as long as drainage is good. Water regularly the first few years until established; afterward, it tolerates occasional dry spells.
Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to encourage strong growth. Prune in late winter or early spring to shape the canopy and remove any damaged or crossing branches. Generally resistant to pests and diseases, Hot Wings™ is hardy in USDA Zones 3–8, making it one of the most versatile ornamental trees available.
Hot Wings™ Tatarian Maple Spacing
With its manageable mature size of 15–20 feet, allow 15–20 feet between trees when planting multiple specimens. For use as an accent in a small yard, a single tree works beautifully in limited space without overwhelming nearby plantings. When planted in groupings for a larger landscape display, maintain 18–20 feet on center to highlight the fiery samaras and glowing fall foliage.
