The Hummingbird’s Lunch Cuphea or Cuphea ignea 'CUPP1751' is a must-have if you enjoy watching hummingbirds flutter and feed. It is also a stunning flowering plant. Long tubular flowers hang from sturdy stems that protrude from the plant. The blooms are a deep reddish burgundy that ombre fades into buttery yellow or white at the opening. This Cuphea blooms from summer through fall. Green ovate foliage fills in the plant and has subtle bronzy margins.
The rounded growth habit of the Hummingbird’s Lunch Cuphea is visually pleasing. It can be featured in a bed, border, or container. A hanging basket is a good option, as hummingbirds and other pollinators such as bees and butterflies can easily access the flowers. Move the plant away from a noisy or busy area so as not to discourage hummingbirds but place it close enough that you can enjoy them when they visit.
Hummingbird’s Lunch Cuphea Care
Hummingbird’s Lunch Cuphea prefers full sun, so choose a spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight. The soil must be fertile, moist, and well drained. Keep the soil evenly moist, but avoid soggy conditions. This beauty is drought tolerant and will be fine if it dries out once in a while, but it blooms best with water during a dry spell. Fertilize each spring as new growth appears.
Prune the plant each fall after the flowers fade. Remove crossed branches and overgrowth to promote a healthy and bushy form.
Hummingbird’s Lunch Cuphea Spacing
The Hummingbird’s Lunch Cuphea stands 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. Space plants 3 feet apart to create a continuous hedge, or grow one plant in an 18-inch wide container.
