Hyacinth Mix Bulbs pack remarkable fragrance into compact 8- to 12-inch flower spikes. Even a small grouping can scent the surrounding area, filling early spring beds and containers with scent before most perennials are in full growth. Hyacinthus orientalis hybrids produce dense clusters of waxy flowers in an assorted range of colors, with the exact combination varying from pack to pack. Each package contains 25 large 14-15 cm bulbs selected for substantial flower spikes during their first spring.

These cold-hardy perennial bulbs grow in USDA zones 4-9 and typically flower from March into April, depending on climate and seasonal conditions. Hyacinths gradually produce smaller flower clusters as plantings age, although established bulbs can continue returning for years when foliage is allowed to mature after flowering. Their compact habit suits the front of spring borders, narrow beds beside walkways, and containers positioned near doors or outdoor seating. Deer and many rodents generally avoid hyacinths, making them a useful spring bulb where browsing pressure affects tulips and other favored plants.

Plant Hyacinth Mix Bulbs in fall, ideally several weeks before the ground freezes, so roots can begin developing before winter provides the chilling period required for spring flowering. Grow them in full sun to partial shade, with good spring light supporting sturdy flower spikes and healthy bulb growth. Choose fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6.0 to 7.0, and improve dense clay with organic matter if drainage is slow.

Set bulbs 4 to 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward and water thoroughly after planting. During active spring growth, keep the soil lightly moist with about 1 inch of water per week from rainfall and irrigation; reduce supplemental watering as the leaves yellow and the bulbs enter summer dormancy. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer according to label directions as shoots emerge in spring. A light 2-inch mulch layer can help moderate winter soil temperatures in colder areas.

Remove faded flower spikes after bloom. Once the leaves yellow and die back naturally, they can be removed as the bulbs enter summer dormancy. Hyacinth bulbs and foliage can cause gastrointestinal irritation if eaten by dogs or cats, and the bulbs may irritate sensitive skin, so gloves are useful when handling larger quantities. For indoor forcing, pot bulbs with their tips near the soil surface, chill them at about 40-45°F for 10 to 13 weeks, then move them into a bright, cool room to begin flowering.

Space bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart in garden beds, arranging five or more together when fragrance and concentrated spring color are priorities. For outdoor containers, use a pot at least 8 to 10 inches deep with drainage holes and position bulbs somewhat closer together for a fuller display. Keep container soil lightly moist during active growth, and avoid leaving dormant bulbs in wet potting mix through summer.

Hyacinth Mix Bulbs Companion Plants

Phlox can extend interest around a hyacinth planting as spring advances, with lower-growing forms covering ground after the bulb flowers begin to fade. In larger beds, potentilla offers a woody backdrop that develops later in the season, helping carry the planting after hyacinth foliage has disappeared. Primrose pairs well in cooler, partially shaded containers where both plants appreciate mild spring temperatures and evenly moist, well-drained soil during active growth.
