The leafy Ice Ballet Tropical Milkweed has long sword-shaped foliage. On top of the tall stems sit clusters of terminal white flowers. This upright plant, also known as Asclepias incarnata, rose milkweed, or swamp milkweed, has a strong presence in a landscape space. The fragrant, delicate flowers bloom during the summer.
Feature the Ice Ballet Tropical Milkweed in mass plantings or borders. The blooms make fantastic cut and dried flowers. This plant attracts pollinators like butterflies, bees, and hummingbirds, but it is deer-resistant for added convenience. The swamp milkweed is native to North America and is a perennial in USDA growing zones 3 through 9.
Ice Ballet Tropical Milkweed Care
Milkweed prefers rich, wet soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. This is a thirsty plant that needs water before the soil dries out. Use mulch in Northern growing zones to hold in the moisture.
Plant in full sun. This plant is not a heavy feeder and grows well without fertilizer, although top dressing the plant in the spring with organic compost will give the plant a boost of nutrients.
Deadhead during the growing season to maintain a clean appearance. Cut the plants back to about 6 inches in the fall. Removing the bulk of the plant will prevent Monarch butterflies from creating winter colonies in the plants.
Ice Ballet Tropical Milkweed Spacing
The Ice Ballet Tropical Milkweed grows 36 to 48 inches tall, and the plants will spread out 18 to 24 inches. Space plants are close as 18 to 24 inches for a dense planting. One plant can fit into a large container.
