Button-eyed rosettes in pale yellow that fade to cream give Imogen® English Shrub Rose a softly shifting look all season. This English shrub rose grows into a sturdy, upright plant about 5 feet tall and 3 feet wide. The medium-sized blooms have delicately frilled petals and arrive in clusters, making each flush feel generous. Their fragrance is light to medium with a fruity, apple-leaning note that’s easiest to catch up close.

Rosa ‘AUStritch’ is named for Imogen, the heroine of Shakespeare’s Cymbeline, and the romantic styling fits the reference. Glossy foliage gives the plant a polished backdrop between flushes. Use it as a small hedge, repeat it in groups of three in a mixed border, or let one stand as a vertical accent among mounded perennials. We recommend planting it where morning coffee happens so the changing color is part of the view.

Imogen® English Shrub Rose Care

Provide full sun for maximum bloom, although a few hours of shade can help in hot summers. Plant into a well-drained garden loam enriched with compost, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.0. Water slowly and deeply so moisture reaches the full root zone, then water again when the top few inches begin to dry. Feed with a rose fertilizer in early spring and repeat after the first major bloom cycle to keep growth steady.

In early spring, thin crossing stems and shorten remaining canes to shape the shrub while improving airflow through the center. During the season, remove spent clusters back to a strong leaf to encourage quicker rebloom. Clean up fallen leaves and petals to reduce disease risk, especially in humid regions. In Zone 5 winters, mound mulch over the base after hard frosts and pull it back gradually as buds swell in spring.

Imogen® English Shrub Rose Spacing

Space plants about 3 feet apart for a hedge or 3–4 feet apart when mixing with other shrubs. Choose a container at least 20 inches wide if you want to grow it in a pot, and keep it where it will get reliable sun. Pair it with Columbine, foamy bells, and ornamental allium for early-season structure and pollinator pull.

Why It’s Called That
