Get continuous summer blooming even in shady areas of your landscape, with Impatiens New Guinea Infinity Lavender (Impatiens hawkeri). Few plants have this kind of blooming power while growing in the shade of trees and buildings. But this relatively small plant (about 10 to 14 inches high when mature and a foot or less around) fills with pretty impatiens blooms in a soft lavender color.
This Infinity impatiens blooms continuously throughout summer with no deadheading. Place it in the ground or in a container. Enjoy it the most in a hanging basket that can show colorful flowers even under a mostly shady patio roof. The pinkish-purple blooms are accented by deep green leaves. Plant several to fill the front of beds or around the outside of a container arrangement, where they can “fill and spill.”
Infinity Lavender Impatiens Care
Tender impatiens are grown as annuals in most areas of the country, but they will bloom from soon after planting until the first fall frost. Plant your impatiens only after any threat of spring frost has passed and the ground has begun to warm up. The plants need soil that drains well, such as with added organic compost. Choose a spot that has at least some shade.
Water the plant regularly, because it does not do well with drought. However, if you miss a watering and Impatiens New Guinea Infinity Lavender wilts, water it right away and wait a few hours; the plant should recover. Give your impatiens some added compost when planting or apply a slow-release granular fertilizer. That should give the plant in a garden bed a good start. Those grown in hanging baskets and other containers need more frequent fertilizing. There is no need to prune impatiens, but you can pinch back any stems that seem long and lanky.
Infinity Lavender Impatiens Spacing
In containers or in the landscape, more of these impatiens is better. When planting them together or before other plants, space them about 6 to 8 inches apart to give them room to grow fully but toward one another.
