Ivory Prince Christmas Rose, Helleborus x ‘Ivory Prince’, is a wonderful addition to light up any deeply shaded garden bed or woodland garden. The burgundy-pink flower buds open up to soft green, creamy white flowers flushed with pink, sitting above leathery, evergreen leaves with silver veining. Their outward-facing, long-lived flowers appear from late winter to early spring.
Ivory Prince grows in USDA Hardiness zones 5-8, reaching 12-18 inches in height with up to a 24-inch spread. These low-maintenance, easy-care performers are deer and rabbit resistant. Ivory Prince Christmas Rose puts on a delightful show in early spring and provides valuable nectar for our early season pollinator friends.
Ivory Prince Christmas Rose Care
Ivory Prince Christmas Rose thrives in well-draining soil, rich in organic matter such as garden compost. Plant it in partial sun to full shade in areas that are protected from harsh cold winter winds. Ivory Prince Christmas Rose will self-seed in good growing conditions producing new plantlets. Keep the soil moist after planting for the first growing season until the plant matures.
Deadheading spent flowers will keep the plant tidy and fresh looking. Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of your plant to protect it from harsh winter winds and temperature fluctuations such as frosts and thaws. As new growth appears in early spring, you can cut back dried or spent foliage from the last season to welcome fresh growth.
Ivory Prince Christmas Rose Spacing
Ivory Prince is stunning planted in groups as a lower-growing perennial groundcover; find a prominent spot for it in shaded perennial gardens and borders. Space plants 18-24 inches apart, giving them enough room to spread out once they mature to full size.
