Turn your backyard into a tropical showcase with the Jackfruit Tree. This fast-growing evergreen is famous for producing the largest tree-borne fruit on Earth, delivering impressive yields and versatile flavor that works for sweet treats or savory dishes. It’s a statement-maker that also puts real food on the table.
Glossy, broad leaves create cool shade and a lush, architectural canopy. In warm climates the tree can bear in as little as 3–4 years, and each ripening fruit becomes a centerpiece for family gatherings and weekend cooking projects.
Jackfruit Tree Care
Give full sun, 6–8+ hours daily. Plant in well-drained soil enriched with organic matter; a loamy or sandy mix is ideal at a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.0. Water deeply when the top 1–2 inches are dry; in the first year plan on 2–3 thorough waterings per week during heat, then reduce to once weekly as roots establish. Mulch 2–4 inches deep to hold moisture, keeping mulch a few inches off the trunk. Feed young trees every 6–8 weeks in spring through early fall with a balanced citrus/tropical fruit fertilizer (for example 8-3-9 or 10-10-10) plus micronutrients; switch to quarterly feedings once established and increase potassium during flowering and fruit fill.
Prune after harvest or late winter to remove dead or crossing wood and to keep the canopy manageable (often 12–15 feet in home landscapes). Best outdoors in USDA Zones 10–12; 9b growers should protect from frost and wind, especially while young. Jackfruit is monoecious and generally self-fruitful, but gentle hand pollination can improve set. Expect 5–7 months from pollination to mature fruit. Use gloves when pruning or harvesting; sticky latex sap may irritate skin.
Jackfruit Tree Spacing
Specimen: allow 25–30 feet of open space and keep at least 20–25 feet from buildings, driveways, septic lines, and power lines.
Orchard/screen: plant on 25–30 foot centers to accommodate the broad canopy and heavy fruit.
Containers: suitable for the first 2–3 years only; use a sturdy 20–25+ gallon pot (about 20–24 inches wide, 18–20 inches deep) with excellent drainage and a strong stake or trellis.
Keep 2–3 feet of clearance around the pot for training and harvest access. Train a single trunk with 3–4 low scaffold branches for easier picking, and support developing fruit so it doesn’t hang over paths.
