Jackfruit Tree makes a statement with a versatile harvest, from sweet ripe fruit to green fruit that cooks into a hearty meat substitute. Artocarpus heterophyllus produces the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, with oblong, textured fruit that can reach impressive size and mature from green to yellowish-green. In the ground, Jackfruit Tree can grow 30 to 70 feet tall and 20 to 50 feet wide, though pruning can keep it smaller for harvesting in warm gardens. Add it if you have space because it offers more kitchen uses than many tropical fruit trees, especially for cooks who want fresh fruit, curries, desserts, roasted seeds, and plant-based meals from one tree.
Jackfruit Tree Care
Plant Jackfruit Tree in spring or early summer once the weather is warm, spacing outdoor trees at least 20 to 30 feet from buildings, power lines, and other trees. Grow it in full sun with 6 or more hours of direct light, nutrient-rich loamy soil, and a pH around 6.0 to 7.0, with drainage that keeps the root zone moist but never waterlogged. Pruning is limited to removing dead or damaged wood, thinning crowded growth, and cutting back upright branches after harvest to manage height.
Growing Jackfruit Tree
Jackfruit Tree typically begins producing in about 3 to 4 years. It has no chill-hour requirement and grows outdoors in warm, humid zones 10 to 12, with protection needed when temperatures fall near freezing. Start container trees outdoors in warm weather, and overwinter indoors only in a very bright, humid space or greenhouse.
Growing Jackfruit Tree in Containers
Jackfruit Tree can be grown in a large container while young, but it performs best in the ground. Start with a 20- to 25-gallon pot with strong drainage, repot as roots fill the container, and grow it on its own rather than underplanting it. For landscape companions, plant jackfruit with banana trees or tropical fruit where heat, humidity, and sun are consistent.
Watering Jackfruit Tree
Water deeply whenever the top 3 inches of soil begin to dry, giving young trees steady moisture while they establish. Wilting leaves or stalled growth can indicate drought stress, while yellowing leaves in wet soil may signal root trouble from poor drainage.
Feeding Jackfruit Tree
Feed Jackfruit Tree in spring and again in fall with a slow-release organic fertilizer made for tropical fruit trees. Annual compost around the root zone also supports steady growth, fruiting, and soil moisture without overfeeding tender roots.
