Are you looking for a spicy hot pepper with bountiful yields? Then look no further because the Jalafuego Jalapeno Pepper will rock your tastebuds and wow you with its bushels of smooth, dark green hot peppers! This hybrid pepper brings out the best qualities of its parents, producing some of the largest crack-resistant jalapeno fruits possible, up to five inches long. Rating 4000 to 6000 on the Scoville Scale, this pepper is known to be the hottest jalapeno-type pepper available! This plant is incredibly disease resistant, easy to grow, and will thrive in most areas. You can add it to salsas and salads for a kick, grill them or stuff them, and make Jalapeno Poppers. The large size makes them perfect for stuffing!
Jalafuego Jalapeno Pepper Care
Sow seeds indoors in flats, four seeds per square inch and a quarter inch deep, about eight weeks before you want to transplant them outside. Keep the soil ideally 80°F to 90°F for quicker germination. Peppers love the heat, so transplant them once outdoor temperatures are hot and stable, at least 70°F, in an area with full sun. The ideal soil for these peppers is well drained, has a pH of 6.8, and has plenty of phosphorous and calcium. When it’s time to transplant the seedlings, space them twelve to eighteen inches apart and in rows two to three feet apart.
Growing Jalafuego Jalapeno Pepper
This pepper will take around 70-80 days until full maturity and is hardy in zones 9-12. Mature pepper plants will reach approximately 24-30 inches tall and 18-24 inches wide. In cold weather, cover Jalafuego with light fabric row covers and add mulch to the base of the plant to keep them warm. Pick the fruits once they have reached the desired size and firmness, and store them in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator. Many people wear gloves when harvesting to avoid getting any capsaicin in their eyes.
This variety is perfect for growing in containers. Select a pot that is 12 inches in diameter and 14 inches deep with at least 5 gallons of soil. Place it in a sunny spot with at least 6 hours of sunlight per day and warm temperatures.
Watering Jalafuego Jalapeno Pepper
Peppers love slightly dry conditions, so check if you need to water your plant by sticking your finger in the soil and feeling if the top inch of the soil is dry. If it isn’t, wait until it is and then water it thoroughly; this helps the peppers develop their flavor and spice levels!
Feeding Jalafuego Jalapeno Pepper
In the ground, if the soil has plenty of phosphorous and calcium, your pepper plant shouldn't need any fertilizer. To fertilize container plants, choose a formula that is slow releasing and contains phosphorous and calcium. Adding too much fertilizer can make the plant prioritize growing foliage over fruits.
