Jamestown is a hybrid beefsteak-type slicing tomato with a lovely deep red crimson color that provides more healthy lycopene than other tomato varieties. It yields 8-10 ounce medium-sized fruits with a robust, sweet tomato flavor that are perfect for slicing, adding to salads, or using in your favorite sauces and recipes. This high-producing, compact, determinate tomato plant is ideal when grown in containers. Jamestown was bred to flourish in hot weather, have exceptional disease resistance, and maintain a vigorous, dense form. It grows about 4 ft in height with a 2-3 ft. spread, and requires 80 days to maturity.
Jamestown Tomato Plant Care
Plant Jamestown Tomato in spring when the soil temperature reaches 60 degrees. Select a spot to plant that receives 6-8 hours of direct sunlight daily and will accommodate its mature spread of up to 3 ft. Plant in well-draining loam soil, allowing ample air circulation between plants. Be sure to water the plant's root area, watering deeply when the first few inches of soil become dry.
Growing Jamestown Tomato Plant
Whether planting in a garden bed or a container, select a location that has well-draining soil rich in organic matter. Be sure to plant it in a location that receives 6 hours or more of direct sunlight to maximize fruit production and harvest. Allow plenty of air circulation between plants by spacing plants about 3 ft apart.
Jamestown Tomato will grow well in a large container with an opening of at least 24 inches and ample drainage holes. Mix organic compost into the potting soil. Jamestown may require more frequent watering when grown in containers during the hot summer months.
Watering Jamestown Tomato Plant
Deeper watering is preferred versus surface watering, and be sure to avoid watering the plant's foliage to prevent foliar diseases. As the temperature increases, you may need to water more frequently to maintain evenly moist soil.
Feeding Jamestown Tomato Plant
Use a slow-release, organic fertilizer specifically formulated for tomatoes when first planting. Once you notice the flowers beginning to set, you can apply a diluted liquid fertilizer to the roots of the plant every couple of weeks throughout the growing season.
