Java moss has a lush, delicate texture that wonderfully complements the fern structure of Java fern. This duo can be placed at the base of taller plants to offer protection for fish eggs. Both plants are easy to grow and will adapt to almost any freshwater aquarium setup. Java fern and java moss come from Southeast Asia and, more specifically, the island of Java in Indonesia.
Best Locations For Growing Java Fern and Java Moss on Driftwood
The java moss and java fern are already attached to a piece of driftwood, so you can simply place the piece in your aquascape. Be sure not to bury the roots of java fern into the aquarium substrate, which can kill the plant. These plants prefer a pH range of 5 to 8, and water temperatures from 70 to 86 degrees Fahrenheit. Both grow slowly and can be pruned for shape and size.
Java Fern and Java Moss on Driftwood Sunlight Requirements
This aquatic plant combination thrives in low to moderate light levels. It can be placed under the overhanging leaves and stems of larger plants. Too much light is detrimental for the plant’s health as it promotes algae growth.
Java Fern and Java Moss on Driftwood Care
Java Moss does not have roots, but rather these sticky little “feet” called rhizoids. It can be grown in the open as well as being placed under other taller foliage. This plant is easily propagated by dividing the primary plant into several smaller pieces.
Watering Java Fern and Java Moss on Driftwood
As an aquatic plant, it does not require any additional watering. It absorbs water and nutrients directly through their stems and leaves.
Fertilizing Java Fern and Java Moss on Driftwood
This stunning plant combination grows well without any liquid fertilizer. It draws nutrients from the water in the aquarium as it returns oxygen to the water.
