Karalee® Petite Pink Butterfly Flower is the secret to a whimsical garden. Gaura lindheimeri is a continuous and long-blooming winner from spring to fall. With a medium stature, gaura is spiky with an upright habit. It creates a delicate accent of depth in both landscape and containers alike. The pink flowers contrast nicely with the dark green foliage. Overall there is a surprising yet subtle, red undertone found along the stems.
Native to North America, Gaura is heat tolerant. It does well as a thriller when planted in a combination container. Gaura’s medium size fits nicely between smaller edging plants and right in front of large border shrubs. When used In containers, this plant softens and compliments any color combination.
Karalee® Petite Pink Butterfly Flower Care
The more sun exposure, the more prolific the blooms. Typically Gaura needs at least 6 hours or more of sunlight daily, but it can take part sun too. Ensure that the soil is well-draining and fertile. It has both average water and soil needs. Allow the soil to dry out between watering and make sure to water deeply. Apply fertilizer or compost annually in garden beds. Applying too much fertilizer, especially in containers, can cause flower spikes to get leggy. This plant also has a tendency to get leggy around mid-summer. To correct this, trim flower stems off completely and allow a 2 to 3 week period for new blooms to develop.
Hardy to zones 6a to 10 b, Gaura can withstand colder climates outdoors. Since Gaura has a taproot, it does not transplant well. Once established, do not try to pot up indoors. Treat this plant like an outdoor perennial in zones 6a to 10b. In zones 5 and below, treat it as an annual.
Karalee® Petite Pink Butterfly Flower Spacing
Space Gaura 8 to 14 inches in the landscape. When planting in containers, space plants at least 6 inches apart and use at least a 14-inch container.
