The Karens Azalea or Rhododendron x 'Karen' is a prolific bloomer and will be loaded with blooms around mid-May. Pinkish-purple flowers are bell-shaped and have dark pink specks near the center. Flowers measure one to two inches and have a hose-in-hose form, so they appear nestled together. Ovate foliage is dark green and has a glossy sheen. Leaves transition to a bold red hue during fall and winter.

The mounding and spreading form makes this shrub an excellent foundation or border planting. Use it to line a driveway or walkway, or add a burst of springtime color to a mixed bed. Create a lovely mass planting or use Karens Azalea as a focal point. Butterflies are drawn to the blooms, allowing the plant to support pollinators. Grow this shrub in zones 4 through 8.

Karens Azalea Care

Plant Karens Azalea in full to part sun. Give these shrubs slightly acidic soil with high organic content. The soil should be moist and well drained. New shrubs need consistent water, while established azaleas only need water during extended dry weather. Fertilize every four weeks using a balanced plant food or a product intended for azaleas and rhododendrons.

Shape the plant as needed after the flowers fade but before the shrub sets new buds. Plants in particularly cold or windy areas will benefit from being wrapped in landscape fabric; otherwise, winter care isn’t necessary.

Karens Azalea Spacing

Karens Azalea reaches 2 to 4 feet tall and 3 to 5 feet wide. Space shrubs 3 to 5 feet apart to create a consistent row.
