Kitchen Minis™ Mini Bonsai Basil was bred for flavor in tight quarters. It stays naturally compact at just 6–12 inches tall and wide, forming a dense, rounded plant that fits comfortably on a sunny windowsill or countertop. The fine Greek-style leaves are small enough to sprinkle whole over pasta, pizza, or salads without chopping. Unlike larger-leaf basils that quickly outgrow indoor pots, this selection keeps its shape and continues producing with regular harvest.
Developed as the first herb in the Kitchen Minis™ collection, Mini Bonsai Basil was selected for indoor performance and uniform growth in 4–6 inch pots. The leaves are highly aromatic and hold their pungent, classic basil flavor. Frequent snipping actually improves branching, so the plant becomes fuller the more you use it.
While Mini Bonsai Basil can be grown outdoors in warm weather, its true strength is reliable indoor production with minimal space. We love it for apartment kitchens and anyone who wants fresh herbs within arm’s reach. It turns even a small, bright kitchen into a working herb garden.
Kitchen Minis™ Mini Bonsai Basil Care
Place this basil in full sun, ideally where it receives at least six hours of direct light each day. Indoors, a south- or west-facing window works best; supplement with a grow light if natural light is limited. Use a well-draining potting mix with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0–7.0. Water thoroughly until excess drains from the bottom, then wait until the surface feels dry before watering again. Feed at half strength with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer every other watering to support steady leaf production.
Pinch the growing tips regularly to encourage side shoots and prevent early flowering. Avoid removing more than one-third of the foliage at a time so the plant can recover quickly. If flower buds form, clip them off to keep energy directed toward leaf growth. For the best flavor, harvest in the morning when essential oils are most concentrated.
Kitchen Minis™ Mini Bonsai Basil Spacing
For indoor growing, one plant fits comfortably in a 4–6 inch container. If planting outdoors in a small herb bed, space each plant 8–10 inches apart to allow airflow and easy harvesting. In patio containers, combine with parsley and thyme for a compact culinary trio. In a sunny kitchen window box, pair with chives and oregano to create a practical, ready-to-snip herb collection.
