- Almost Black Heart-Shaped Foliage
- Bright Indirect Light
- Mature Height 6 - 12 Inches
- Water Needs - Dry Out Between Waterings
Krohniana Hoya is a smaller variety known for its intriguing foliage. The petite heart-shaped leaves range from deep forest green to dark maroon and almost black, growing on brownish-black stems. This Hoya typically flowers in the summer when days are long, producing clusters of pearly white, highly scented flowers that last for a week or more.
While there is some confusion over the Latin name, Hoya Krohniana ‘Black’ is a distinct species from Hoya lacunosa. Native to the rainforest jungles of the Philippines, Hoya krohniana grows as an epiphyte, attaching itself to the bark of trees and lower-story plants.
Best Locations for Growing Krohniana Hoya Black
Place this dainty Hoya where its intricate leaf coloring can be appreciated up close, such as on a desk, low shelf, or tablescape. Krohniana can also be grown in a smaller hanging basket, as it will eventually spread to 18-24 inches. Higher humidity rooms, like bathrooms and kitchens, provide the perfect climate. Keep the plant away from drafty doors or windows, as well as heating and cooling vents. Consistent temperatures between 65°F and 80°F are required, as this plant does not tolerate colder conditions.
Krohniana Hoya Black Sunlight Requirements
Indirect bright light is essential for vigorous growth and reliable indoor flowering. An east or west-facing window is ideal, while a room with southern exposure can also work. Position your Hoya at least 3 feet from a window with direct exposure or across the room to prevent sun scorch.
Krohniana Hoya Black Care
Hoya prefers a loose potting mix that allows for ample air circulation around the roots. A blend of orchid bark and all-purpose potting mix at a ratio of 1:1 meets these needs and is easy to find at garden centers. Shallow pots are best for the smaller root structure of Hoya.
Repotting is only necessary when growth slows or roots start to grow from the bottom drainage holes; some plants can happily remain in the same pot for years. Do not remove the flower stems when the blooms fade. The stem, called a peduncle, can regenerate more flowers when left in place.
Watering Krohniana Hoya Black
Always allow the top inch or so of potting mix to dry between waterings. Depending on humidity levels, you may need to water 1-2 times a week during spring and summer. Reduce watering for plants in lower light or those residing in high-humidity areas like in bathrooms or greenhouses. Placing the pot on a pebble tray or using a room humidifier can help maintain humidity above 60%.
Feeding Krohniana Hoya Black
Fertilizers high in phosphorus are effective for encouraging blooming and strong root structure. Look for products formulated for African Violets or orchids, which are well-suited for use on other blooming houseplants. Apply at half the manufacturer's recommended dosage once a month during spring and summer.
