Laced Up Elderberry, Sambucus nigra 'SNR1292', is a very unique plant that looks like something from a Dr. Seuss book. These magical looking shrubs are definitely something your neighbors haven’t seen before. Give this shrub plenty of space to grow, and use it as a focal point in your landscape. Although the plant gets large, it only needs 3 to 4 feet wide space in the garden because of the upright growth habit of the plant.
This shrub was introduced in 2018, and has quickly become one of our best selling plants. The tall bush produces hundreds of pink flowers in early summer. The contrast between the dark foliage and bright pink flowers looks astounding. The leaves have a very dark foliage but a feathery look and feel.
The plant looks very exotic, however it is very easy to care and grow. It is also very winter hardy and can be grown up to zone 4! The columnar growth habit allows you to grow these shrubs in planters, as a border, or a focal point. For a very unique idea, plant several next to each other as a privacy hedge. This plant has also been called the Strait Laced Elderberry.
Laced Up Elderberry Care
If you want this plant to produce berries, you will need to plant next to Black Beauty, Black Lace, or Instant Karma Elderberry as a pollinator. These shrubs do best in full sun. But do not do well in hot climates.
Pruning Laced Up Elderberry is not necessary. The columnar growth habit is consistent, and doesn’t require pruning or training the shrub. You may cut off dead branches in early spring. Errant shoots can be removed from the ground.
All elderberry berries are toxic to pets and livestock. However, the foliage has a distinctive scent, so animals tend to leave it alone.
Laced Up Elderberry Spacing
If you choose to plant these shrubs into a privacy hedge, you can space it out 36 inches apart, center on center. In garden planters, you will need to use large containers that allow enough space for the roots. Plant these at least 3 feet away from the house to allow for enough room to grow.
