- Intense orange colored fragrant flowers!
A member of the daisy family, calendula delights our senses with an intense orange color reminiscent of marigolds. In fact, a calendula nickname is pot marigold. Its chrysanthemum-like array of petals fan out from the center in layers and create an airy look suspended about the medium green foliage. Lady Godiva Orange English Marigold blossoms blanket the foliage so completely, you will have a hard time seeing the greenery.
Native to Western Europe, the Mediterranean and Southwest Asia, Zones 7a through 11b, this heat tolerant annual will flourish in the milder climates as an early spring flower, after all danger of freeze is passed in Zones 3-6. It can handle a light frost, but quickly declines when temperatures reach 32 degrees and lower. Lady Godiva Orange is an improved hybrid that has more heat tolerance than its ancestors, giving southern regions of the country the benefit of its three season beauty.
Lady Godiva Orange English Marigold Care
This continuous blooming annual is easy to maintain. Full sun to part shade is preferred, with light shade appreciated in hot climates. Good draining soil, with an average pH of 5.8 to 6.2, kept moderately moist will reward you with copious blossoms and healthy green foliage. A water soluble fertilizer once or twice in the season for in ground plants, and a regular fertilization schedule for hanging baskets, window boxes and containers, will give you flowers from spring to fall.
Deadheading is not necessary as this plant remains tidy throughout the season. Prune lightly to encourage branching and renewed vigor if the heat of the summer in hot climates slows it down. This annual makes great cut flowers for your arrangements, and retains its color as a dried flower, increasing the seasonal uses for your beyond-the-garden needs.
Lady Godiva Orange English Marigold Spacing
Growing 10 to 16 inches tall, and spreading out 12 to 18 inches wide, give calendula 8 to 12 inches of space between plantings to give it the air circulation it needs to prevent powdery mildew or other fungal diseases. Pair this continuous rebloomer with its companion calendula Lady Godiva Yellow, or SuperTunia Honey for a nice complimentary combination. Create a more earthy display with some bush cherry tomatoes and basil.
