- Growing Zones 9 - 11
There are so few truly blue flowers, so Laguna Sky Blue Lobelia (L. erinus) is a must-have annual for adding unusual color to any summer garden or container. The soft blue, tiny flowers grow all season on branches that cascade from the plant’s mounded center. Use Laguna Sky Blue to suggest falling water by planting it in an old watering pail or other container. Or just fill the edges of a garden bed, hanging basket, or window box with the low-growing flower and enjoy its subtle but colorful spread and continuous blooming from early summer through the first frost.
Like most annuals, lobelia plants need average water, but they don’t like wet feet, so be sure to plant them in soil that drains well. Then, just sit back and watch the plants flower and spread with no care necessary. This lobelia is self-cleaning, so gardeners don’t need to prune or deadhead to keep the flower power going. Lobelia is also considered to be deer resistant.
Laguna Sky Blue Lobelia Care
Plant Laguna Sky Lobelia after danger of frost has passed. It needs some sun (at least 4 to 6 hours a day) for best flowering. It is more heat tolerant than traditional lobelia varieties and should bloom on warm days as long as night temperatures are no higher than the mid- to upper 70s. In the warmest areas, lobelia might last longer or perform as a perennial, but typically, the plants die back when cool fall comes.
There is no need to prune or deadhead this lobelia, but if the plant grows too large, it is OK to give it a light trim for shape. Only water your lobelia when the surface of the soil feels dry, but don’t let it stay too wet or too dry for long periods. Lobelias planted in the ground can benefit from some added compost or a balanced fertilizer at planting. After that, they need little help. Container-grown lobelias benefit from regular fertilizing.
Laguna Sky Blue Lobelia Spacing
Your lobelia can spread or trail to about 12 to 24 inches, so plant several about 6 to 10 inches apart. In containers, plant lobelia around the outer edges so it can trail over the edge.
