Make a great start to the gardening year by planting this long-blooming, bright violet-purple beauty. Laguna® Ultraviolet™ lobelia was bred to better handle the summer heat than other varieties. Growing 6-12 inches high, it is low mounding making it ideal for the front of the border. Or combine it with Superbells® Grape Punch and Superbena® Sparkling Amethyst for a stunning combination container.
This lobelia has no disease or pest problems. You will love how it attracts birds and butterflies. It is native to South Africa and, interestingly, named after a sixteenth-century Flemish botanist. In its role as a filler, plant it in mixed borders, containers, and hanging baskets. Use it in the landscape as an edging plant or in mass plantings. Lobelia are considered to be deer resistant and shouldn't be bothered unless the deer have no other food sources around.
Laguna® Ultraviolet Lobelia Care
This easy-care plant just needs a midsummer, light application of fertilizer to promote new growth and flowering. No deadheading is needed, but you may want to cut the plant back after each flush of flowering to encourage new blossoms.
This lobelia requires average watering – it is important to note that it does not like wet feet, so provide good drainage in containers. In the landscape, plant in moist, well-drained soil in part sun to sun.
Laguna® Ultraviolet Lobelia Spacing
Space young plants 6 inches apart. They have a spread of 12-24 inches. This will provide enough room for air circulation between plants, to ensure the plants stay healthy.
