Late Season Blooming Tulips save their display for May, extending the tulip season. This 35-bulb blend of Tulipa hybrids produces an assortment of flower colors on strong stems reaching about 20 to 26 inches tall. Each premium 11-12 cm bulb is selected for a substantial first-season flower display. The unlabeled mixture keeps the final color arrangement pleasantly unpredictable. 

These late-flowering tulips are hardy in USDA zones 3-8 and bloom after early- and midseason tulips, which can reduce their exposure to the colder weather common earlier in spring. Their upright stems fit cutting gardens, the middle or back of spring borders, and large patio pots where flowers can also be harvested for arrangements. Tulip flowering can gradually decline over successive years depending on climate, drainage, and summer conditions, so some gardeners add new bulbs periodically to maintain a dense display. Tulip bulbs and foliage are toxic when eaten by dogs, cats, and horses, so store unplanted bulbs securely and use care in gardens visited by pets.

Plant Late Season Blooming Tulip Mix Bulbs in fall after soil temperatures have cooled, ideally about 6 to 8 weeks before the ground freezes, so roots can form before winter chilling begins. Select a site in full sun to partial shade, with plentiful spring sunlight supporting sturdy stems and good bulb development. Loose, well-drained loam with a slightly acidic to neutral pH around 6.0 to 7.0 is ideal; persistently wet soil can cause bulbs to rot.

Set bulbs about 6 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward and water thoroughly once after planting to settle the surrounding soil. Keep the root zone lightly moist during active spring growth, supplying additional water when seasonal rainfall is limited, then allow conditions to become drier as the plants enter summer dormancy. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting or when shoots appear in spring according to label directions.

Clip off faded flowers before seed develops, leaving all green foliage attached to the bulb. Allow the leaves to yellow naturally for roughly six weeks after flowering before removing them, since this period replenishes stored energy for a possible return the following spring. A 2- to 3-inch mulch layer after the soil cools can help moderate winter temperature swings.

Space bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart in garden soil, arranging 10 or more together when a broad mixed-color display is preferred. For containers, choose a vessel at least 12 inches deep with unobstructed drainage and position bulbs somewhat closer together for a dense seasonal planting. Potted bulbs require winter chilling, and containers in very cold climates may need a sheltered location where the soil remains cold but does not repeatedly freeze solid.

Dianthus works well to fill the space near the front of a tulip planting because its lower growth shares the preference for sunny sites and well-drained soil. Alyssum can serve the same role in spring containers, forming a low layer around emerging tulips without crowding their upright growth. In larger beds, use spirea as a permanent shrub framework around seasonal bulb groupings; it will carry the planting after tulip foliage disappears for summer.
