A light licorice scent, soft velvety bright green foliage, and a neat, never unruly trailing habit make the Lemon Licorice plant the perfect addition to your container or hanging basket. Use it to fill in the space left by leggier annuals or perennials, or as a ground cover to fill in and provide a bright relief to darker foliage plants in your garden. Despite its name and light licorice scent, Lemon Licorice Helichrysum is not edible.

Native to South Africa, helichrysums are drought tolerant once established, and Lemon Licorice Helichrysum is no exception. It is perennial in Zones 9a-10b, and can be set out after danger of last frost in all other zones. It does not tolerate wet soil so plant in well drained medium or amended garden soil. Pair it with roses which share its preference for a pH of 6 to 7 for a stunning display all summer long.

Lemon Licorice Plant Care

Lemon Licorice Helichrysum will appreciate some afternoon shade in hot weather. Water a little, fertilize or compost when needed. Very few pests will bother it and it is virtually disease free and deer won’t browse on it. An easy care plant, if you give it a little you will get a lot out of it.

Pinching back or deadheading will encourage branching and result in a fuller appearance. It is not required, but this will prevent that leggy look that sometimes occurs and give you a more upright presentation.

Lemon Licorice Plant Spacing

Topping out at 12 inches and trailing up to 20 inches, it makes an ideal hanging basket filler. Left to develop long strands, this filler annual can be coaxed to become a weeping foundation feature in a hanging basket or container, accentuating more dramatic colors and textures above it. Give it some space when planting in ground, 18 to 20 inches will encourage it to fill in nicely.
