The Little Redhead Indian Pink or Spigelia marilandica 'Little Redhead' is a beautiful plant that requires little care but offers bold style to an outdoor area. The tubular flowers are bright red and possess buttery yellow interiors. Several flowers bloom per each upright stalk during spring and summer. Bright, glossy green, ovate foliage with pointed ends gives the plants more texture and offsets the colorful blooms.
Include the Little Redhead Spigelia in a mixed bed or create a one-of-a-kind mass planting. The tall flowering stalks add height to a border or work as a thriller in a container. As a North American native, the Little Redhead Indian Pink thrives with little care once acclimated. Grow this perennial in zones 5 through 9.
Little Redhead Spigelia Care
The Little Redhead Spigelia is adaptable and can grow in full to part sun, allowing for flexible placement options in a landscape. Plant in fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Water when the soil is dry, and be mindful that container-grown plants need water more often. Apply a layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant to retain moisture and give the soil a nutritional boost. Use a slow-release fertilizer in the spring to start the growing season strong.
Deadhead the flowers to encourage a second flush of blooms. Trim growth to ground level after the first frost.
Little Redhead Spigelia Spacing
Little Redhead Spigelia grows 24 to 28 inches tall and 20 to 24 inches wide. Space plants 20 to 24 inches apart to create a full planting.
