Long Stemmed Perennial Tulips rise 20 to 28 inches on sturdy stems, carrying cup-shaped flowers in pink, red, deep purple, and white through mid spring. Botanically grouped as Tulipa Darwin Hybrid Group, these tulips are valued for stronger repeat bloom than many other garden tulip classes. Each bag includes 35 top-size 11-12 cm bulbs, enough to create a broad sweep of color or several generous container plantings. In our garden, we regularly cut the clean stems for indoor arrangements.

Darwin Hybrids are bred for tall stems and repeat spring flowering, making them one of the better tulip groups for gardeners who prefer to leave bulbs in the ground. They are cold hardy in USDA zones 3-8 and go dormant in late spring to early summer. Use the mix behind low spring perennials, along a walkway, through a cutting bed, or in deep patio containers where the tall stems can be appreciated. Deer and rabbits commonly browse tulip shoots and buds, so protect exposed plantings in gardens with regular wildlife pressure.

Choose full sun to partial shade, with the strongest flowering usually occurring in full sun. Set bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep in loose, fertile, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH of roughly 6.0 to 7.0; heavy clay should be amended to improve drainage.

Water deeply once after planting to settle the soil around the bulbs. During active spring growth, supply about 1 inch of water per week when rainfall is lacking, then reduce irrigation as foliage yellows and dormancy begins. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer at planting or as shoots emerge in spring, following label rates. A 2-inch mulch layer helps moderate winter soil temperature, especially where freeze-thaw cycles can lift newly planted bulbs.

After flowering, remove the spent blooms before seed develops, but leave the green stems and leaves in place. Wait until the foliage has fully yellowed and browned, usually 6 to 8 weeks after bloom, before cutting it away. In zones 3-5, move planted containers to an unheated garage or shed for winter protection to limit hard freezing of the root zone. Tulip bulbs and foliage are toxic if eaten by dogs, cats, and horses, so store unplanted bulbs away from pets and choose planting areas where digging is unlikely.

Space bulbs 3 to 6 inches apart in garden beds, setting them in groups of 10 or more for a fuller block of color. For containers, choose a pot at least 12 inches deep with drainage holes and place bulbs 2 to 3 inches apart. Keep pots lightly moist during active growth, and protect them from prolonged winter saturation.
