Every garden has a spot that could use a nice bright shot of color, especially late in the summer when other plants are starting to fade. Lumen Gold™ Fountain Grass has an ever changing color palette that always looks fresh and perky. Changing from pale yellow to electric lemon and orange shades at the first frosts in fall. This herbaceous perennial will hold its foliage very late in the winter making it semi-evergreen. Adding Lumen Gold™ to containers will provide year-round interest for a patio or deck.
Fountain Grass is very low maintenance and can be used as an edging plant along a sidewalk or driveway, planted in large groups on a slope for erosion control or serve as the anchor plant in a mixed seasonal container. Deer and rabbit resistant. Ornamental grasses are rarely bothered by pests or diseases. Lumen Gold has airy flower plumes that stand above the foliage and make wonderful additions to a fresh or dried flower arrangement. The acidic yellow of Lumen Gold™ Fountain Grass contrasts lovely with the purple - maroon foliage color of Heuchera, Sweet Potato vine or Purple Fountain Grass.
Lumen Gold™ Fountain Grass Care
Fountain Grass will grow in just about any spot. Full sun to part shade. Slightly clay to sandy soil. Fertile to poor soil. The most important requirement is well drained soil that holds moisture. A deep, regular watering in the first year helps to encourage deep rooting and establish drought resistance when Lumen Gold™ is mature.
Lumen Gold™ Fountain Grass benefits from an annual hard cutback. This is done in the early spring when new growth emerges. Light feeding with a well balanced, slow release fertilizer can also be applied in the early spring. Fertilizing is more important if Lumen Gold™ Fountain Grass is planted in a container. Dividing is recommended every 3-4 years to reinvigorate growth.
Lumen Gold™ Fountain Grass Spacing
The compact size of Lumen Gold™ makes it easy to plant in any nook or cranny where you need a bright spot of color. The mature height is 12-24 inches and the spread is 24-36 inches. Spacing plants at 30 inches on center is recommended.
