The bold red flowers of the Luna Red Hibiscus are breathtaking and make this shrub stand out. The blooms are a consistent shade of ruby red and have a pleated look that adds to their dazzling appearance. Each flower measures a staggering 6 to 8 inches across. This shrub blooms continuously from spring through fall. The flowers certainly get a lot of attention, but the Hibiscus moscheutos also boasts medium green leaves that give the plant a full and dense appearance.
Add color along a foundation wall or fence, or create a focal point in a mixed bed with the Luna Red Hibiscus. Mature shrubs reach about 3 feet tall, so you can separate different areas of a yard without blocking sightlines. Once it has settled in, this low-maintenance plant requires very little attention. Bees and butterflies flock to this hibiscus, and foragers like deer leave it alone. Grow the Luna Red Hibiscus in zones 5 through 9.
Luna Red Hibiscus Care
The more sun, the better for the Luna Red Hibiscus. This lovely shrub needs at least 6 hours of sunlight to grow and thrive. Young plants need consistently damp soil until they become acclimated. Mature plants need water weekly, especially during a dry spell. Mulch will slow evaporation and give the soil a nutritional boost. Fertilize in early spring using a slow-release plant food to support new growth.
Prune the Luna Red Hibiscus to maintain a desirable shape. Trim the hibiscus in late winter or early spring and remove dead or damaged growth at any time.
Luna Red Hibiscus Spacing
The Hibiscus moscheutos Luna Red reaches 3 feet tall and wide. Leave 3 feet between plants to create a dense row.
