Feature
Originating from South America, the Makoyana Calathea or Cathedral window plant as it is sometimes known, is a truly stunning plant that will draw attention wherever it is placed. With showy oval-shaped foliage in shades of green, red and purple, the Makoyana Calathea will bring color and interest to any room. This houseplanit can be fussy about its growing conditions; however, get it right and you will not be disappointed.
Best Locations For Growing Makoyana Calathea
The Makoyana Calathea requires high humidity levels, which makes the humid atmosphere of a bathroom or kitchen ideal for growing it.
Makoyana Calathea Sunlight Requirements
This calathea plant requires bright, but diffused or indirect light to thrive. Be prepared to move it though as too much light can bleach the foliage.
Makoyana Calathea Care
Being native to warmer climates, the Makoyana Calathea prefers to be kept at a temperature between 65 to 85 °F and away from any cold drafts. Where possible, avoid watering this plant with tap water, as the chemical compounds within it may damage the beautiful foliage. Dry or crispy leaves can be removed by cutting at the base of the stem using a pair of sanitized and sharp scissors. Leaves can be dusted with a clean cloth to keep them looking their best.
Watering Makoyana Calathea
During the growing season, the Makoyana Calathea requires a free-draining soil that is kept moist, but not wet. If the top inch of soil is dry to the touch, then it is time to water, ideally using harvested rainwater. After watering, it is important to allow any excess water to drain away freely, as this will help prevent any root rot. Misting every other day will keep your Makoyana Calathea from drying out and increase humidity levels.
Feeding Makoyana Calathea
During the growing season from spring until the autumn, the Makoyana Calathea can be fed every four weeks with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
