Marge Elderberry stands out for fruit production in hot-summer gardens where many European elderberries struggle. Sambucus nigra subsp. nigra 'Marge' was selected from a Haschberg seedling and is valued for large, juicy dark berries, summer flower clusters, and a more upright, less suckering habit than many American elderberries. It grows quickly to about 6 to 10 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide, making it useful in edible hedges, berry gardens, sunny borders, and wildlife plantings.
University of Missouri trials found 'Marge' produced larger berries and higher yields than several American elderberry selections in the same study. This selection is a great choice for European elderberry fruit quality with stronger Midwest-style heat performance.
Marge Elderberry Care
Plant Marge Elderberry in full sun for the strongest flowering and fruiting, although light afternoon shade is fine in hotter regions. Provide deep, fertile, well-drained soil that stays evenly moist, with a preferred pH around 5.5 to 6.5. Set the plant at the same depth it grew in the nursery pot, water thoroughly after planting, and add compost to improve soil texture before mulching the root zone. Space plants 6 to 10 feet apart, or about 5 to 6 feet apart in productive rows, leaving room for air movement and easy harvest.
Prune in late winter while dormant by removing dead, weak, damaged, and older canes. Thin crowded growth, and leave a mix of 1- to 3-year-old canes (the most productive), but do not cut the whole plant to the ground each year because Marge fruits on older wood rather than first-year growth.
Growing Marge Elderberry
Marge Elderberry flowers in early summer and ripens in late summer, often from mid-August into September depending on climate. It is partially self-fertile, but berry set is usually heavier with another European elderberry nearby or with a small grouping of Marge plants. Netting may be needed as fruit colors to deter birds.
Harvest entire clusters once the berries are fully dark purple, then strip and process them soon after picking because elderberries are delicate and can ferment quickly. Elderberries should be cooked before eating in quantity; use them for syrup, jelly, jam, wine, juice, pies, or dried tea blends. Note: leaves, stems, and seeds are not for consumption.
Growing Marge Elderberry in Containers
Use a large container at least 20 to 24 inches wide for young Marge Elderberry, with drainage holes and a moisture-retentive potting mix amended with compost. Because this is a fast grower, repot every 1 to 2 years in spring or move it into a half-barrel style planter as the roots fill the pot. Container plants need more frequent watering than in-ground plants, especially during summer heat and while fruit is sizing. In cold regions, move the pot into an unheated protected area after leaf drop or insulate the container so the root system is not exposed to repeated freezing and thawing.
Watering Marge Elderberry
Water deeply and regularly during the first season, keeping the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Elderberries appreciate steady moisture, especially from flowering through fruit swell. Established plants handle some dry weather better than many elderberries, yet wilting leaves, small cymes, or shriveling fruit mean the plant needs a deep soak.
Feeding Marge Elderberry
Feed lightly in early spring with compost or a balanced fertilizer such as 10-10-10, applying it around the root zone before new growth accelerates. Avoid heavy feeding after midsummer so stems can firm up before winter.
