Matrix® Halloween Pansy’s showy, extra-large, orange and plum flowers stand out against its bluish-green foliage. Otherwise known as Viola x wittrockiana ’Matrix Halloween’, this pansy produces more blooms than most pansy hybrids, atop solid stems. Matrix® Halloween is cold hardy in zones 7 to 11, flowering from spring until frost. This herbaceous annual attracts pollinators, including hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees.
Originating in parts of Asia and Europe, Matrix® Halloween Pansy adores cool weather and stays compact. Easy to care for and low maintenance, it makes a wonderful addition to borders, beds, and containers. Plant it along the edges of sidewalks and driveways to soften hard edges. Use it as a filler in a container combination, or add it to window boxes and strawberry vases. The flowers are lovely dried and can be pressed in a book, or surprise family and friends with a vanilla buttercream adorned with a few colorful candied pansies.
Matrix® Halloween Pansy Care
Plant pansies during spring in partial to full sun. Protect the foliage in warmer climates from the harsh afternoon sun if possible. The soil should be organic, moist, well drained, and acidic. An optimal soil pH range is 5.5 to 6. To avoid fungal disease, amend poorly draining soil with compost. To reduce water loss, apply a few inches of organic mulch. Having medium watering needs, this plant requires about an inch of water weekly. Apply a balanced organic fertilizer such as Espoma Bio-tone® Starter Plus at planting, and then Espoma Flower-tone® in midseason (3-4-5).
Matrix® Halloween Pansy is a low-maintenance perennial. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage flowering, and cut back growth to a few inches during midsummer to rejuvenate growth in the fall. Remove any brown foliage as it appears throughout the growth cycle. For container plants, select a pot with sufficient drainage holes and water only when the top inch of soil is dry. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer once a month.
Matrix® Halloween Pansy Spacing
Matrix® Halloween Pansy grows 8 inches high and spreads 8 to 10 inches. Space each plant 8 to 10 inches apart. Plant with asters, snapdragons, violas, and mums in foundation plantings and beds. Add it to pollinator and cottage gardens. Create container combinations with pansies as the filler, and add a thriller and spiller like ranunculus and sweet alyssum.
