Medallion Calathea is a gorgeous houseplant with large medallion-shaped leaves. It's very easy to grow with the proper care. It's known for its bold, patterned foliage. The leaves may tend to fold or curl up at night time–this is perfectly natural. The undersides of the leaves offer a striking purplish color. This pet friendly plant prefers a humid environment. This plant is native to Ecuador.
Best Locations For Growing Medallion Calathea
This is part of the prayer plant family, and with its showy leaves, it should be placed in a position where it can be fully admired. Once placed, it may take a couple weeks to acclimate to the spot; give it time. It will flourish in either the kitchen or bathroom as well as more common areas of the house or office.
Medallion Calathea Sunlight Requirements
This plant prefers medium to bright light. However, it can also tolerate low light conditions. If the leaves begin to show signs of fading, then it's receiving too much sunlight. Placing it in more dappled or filtered light can solve this problem. Avoid too much direct sunlight as it will scorch the leaves.
Medallion Calathea Care
This plant does well with an occasional rinsing to remove dust and retain the shine of the leaves. The extra moisture is also good for hydrating the plant. Calathea requires well-drained potting soil to prevent root rot. It tolerates a variety of household temperatures, but it tends to flourish in warmer temperatures. This stunning plant can be placed outside during the growing season, but should be brought in when night temperatures regularly drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit. This plant can be propagated by dividing the tuber when repotting.
Watering Medallion Calathea
This plant thrives on a regular watering schedule. Keeping the spoil moist is important for the health of this houseplant. Do not overwater the plant but be even more careful to not allow it to dry out as it is not drought tolerant. Avoid unfiltered tap water as it generally contains salts, chlorine and fluoride, which will cause the leaves to curl up or turn brown.
Feeding Medallion calathea
This plant does well with the application of a general houseplant fertilizer with a 15-15-15 mixture once a month. There is no need to fertilize the plant during the winter months. Too much fertilizer may lead to root burn.
