Growing Zones
Agave americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ is a living accent piece for dry gardens and modern patios. Broad, silvery-green leaves flaunt a creamy white stripe down the center, creating bold contrast and clean lines. Compact size and slow growth make it easy to place without overwhelming small spaces.
Use it in gravel beds, rock gardens, and sun-drenched containers for instant structure. The sculptural rosette pairs beautifully with grasses, cacti, and dark pottery, adding desert elegance with almost no fuss.
Agave Americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ Care
Give 6–10 hours of direct sun. Plant in fast-draining, gritty soil (cactus mix or sandy loam); aim for pH 6.0–7.8 and avoid heavy clay unless heavily amended with coarse material. Water deeply but infrequently—outdoors every 2–4 weeks in hot weather and far less in cool seasons; in containers, water when the mix is completely dry. Never let water pool around the crown. Do not overfeed; apply a light dose of low-nitrogen cactus fertilizer once in spring only.
Remove spent or damaged leaves with gloves and eye protection. Hardy to roughly 15–20°F; best in USDA zones 8b–11. In colder zones, overwinter in a bright, frost-free spot. Monocarpic: blooms once after many years, then dies, often leaving offsets you can replant. Caution: sharp terminal spines and leaf edges; site away from play areas and high-traffic paths.
Agave Americana ‘Mediopicta Alba’ Spacing
For a specimen, allow 4–6 feet of horizontal clearance from walls and walkways to showcase the rosette and avoid accidental contact. For massing, space 3–4 feet on center.
Keep at least 3 feet from paths and seating. In containers, start with a 14–18 inch pot with large drainage holes; size up to 20–24 inches as roots fill. Use a porous cactus mix and a pot with drainage; raise on feet to prevent waterlogging.
