Mid Season Blooming Tulip Mix includes a broad mix of saturated spring colors for large landscape displays. Each Darwin Hybrid tulip develops a substantial egg-shaped flower on a sturdy 22- to 24-inch stem, perfect for cutting. Upright lance-shaped foliage forms below the blooms. The assortment is grown from 11- to 12-cm bulbs and flowers in mid spring, creating a concentrated wave of color just as many early bulbs begin to finish.

Darwin Hybrid tulips are valued for their large flowers, strong stems, and better repeat-bloom potential than many other tulip classes. This mixture is hardy in USDA zones 3 to 8 and performs well in mass plantings, broad borders, cutting gardens, and large patio containers. The mixed palette allows gardeners to create a full display from a single planting. In well-drained sites, some bulbs may return for several seasons when the foliage is allowed to mature fully after flowering.

Mid Season Blooming Tulip Mix Bulbs Care

Plant the bulbs in fall, about 6 to 8 weeks before the ground freezes, after soil temperatures have cooled. Grow in full sun to partial shade in well-drained loamy, sandy, or amended clay soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH. Set bulbs 6 to 8 inches deep with the pointed end facing upward.

Water thoroughly after planting, then rely mainly on fall and winter precipitation until growth resumes in spring. During active growth, provide supplemental water when rainfall is limited and the soil begins to dry; reduce irrigation once the foliage starts yellowing and dormancy begins. Apply a balanced bulb fertilizer as shoots emerge to extend the longevity of the bulbs.

Deadhead faded flowers while leaving the stems and green leaves intact. Wait until the foliage has fully yellowed before removing it so the bulbs have time to rebuild their reserves. Apply a 2-inch layer of organic mulch in late fall to help insulate bulbs from temperature swings.

Mid Season Blooming Tulip Mix Bulbs Spacing

Space bulbs about 3 to 6 inches apart, grouping 10 or more together when creating broad drifts or border displays. For containers, use a pot at least 10 to 12 inches deep with sharp drainage and enough width to hold a clustered planting. In colder climates, move containers to a protected, unheated space, such as a garage or shed, to shelter them from repeated hard freezes.

Mid Season Blooming Tulip Mix Bulbs Companion Plants

Sea thrift works well along sunny border edges because its compact evergreen foliage occupies the foreground while the taller tulips flower behind it. False cypress can provide a permanent woody backdrop that gives the changing tulip colors a steady structural setting. In containers, fan flower can be added as temperatures warm, filling the pot after the tulip display declines and continuing the season in the same bright exposure.
