Growing Zones
Turn dim corners into showpieces with Mighty Chocolate Cherry Astilbe. Towering cherry red plumes rise above deep green foliage washed with burgundy and chocolate, creating a velvety color shift you can see from across the yard. It stands tall without fuss, bringing drama to shade where most perennials struggle.
Plant it once and let it perform. The bold flower wands light up woodland beds, soften foundations, and fill vases beautifully. Consistent moisture keeps the texture lush, while the upright habit delivers an easy, high-impact statement all summer.
Mighty Chocolate Cherry Astilbe Care
Give bright shade to part shade with 2–5 hours of gentle morning sun; avoid hot afternoon sun. Plant in rich, humus-amended soil that drains well but stays evenly moist; target a slightly acidic to neutral pH of 5.5–7.0. Water deeply to keep soil consistently damp, especially during bud and bloom; aim for about 1 inch per week, more in heat.
Mulch 2–3 inches to hold moisture and cool roots. Feed in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer or a compost top-dress; optional light liquid feed after the first flush. Deadhead for tidiness or leave plumes to fade naturally; cut foliage back in late fall or very early spring. Divide clumps every 3–4 years in spring or fall to maintain vigor. Hardy in USDA zones 4–8; in warmer climates provide extra afternoon shade and reliable moisture.
Mighty Chocolate Cherry Astilbe Spacing
For a single statement plant, allow a 24–30 inch circle. For a mass planting or shady border, set 18–24 inches on center so foliage knits without crowding. Keep at least 18 inches from paths and walls to accommodate the 3–4 foot flower height and natural spread.
In containers, use a 16–18 inch wide pot at least 12 inches deep with drainage; place in bright shade and water consistently. Stake only in windy sites to steady tall plumes.
