Let’s go mini with the annuals this time. Dozens and dozens of mini petunia flowers will blanket the bright green foliage on these improved hybrid petunias, but don’t let their size fool you. They pack a veritable punch of color even when viewed from afar and you are going to get many compliments from your neighbors and friends when you hang these colorful baskets. Bright violet trumpets with deeper plum throats, star shaped stripes of violet on white, and pure white trumpets will absolutely blow you away with their showy vigor and remind you of misty early morning sunrises on the ocean.
Supertunias are improved hybrids of petunias, which gives them more disease resistance, better heat tolerance, no or less seed production and no cessation of flowering during the hottest months of summer. Mini means there are going to be smaller flowers, but a lot more of them. Vista means these are going to pack a visual punch even from farther away. You can see why these have been placed in a combination for you this spring.
Misty Seas Annual Combination Care
Supertunias are less fussy about soil drainage than their cousins the calibrachoas, but will benefit from a well draining soil and full sun with some light shade. They are extremely heat tolerant and will bloom nonstop all season long, well into fall in some areas of the country. They are heavy feeders, so plan on applying a slow release fertilizer when first planting your annuals, then follow up after about 2 months with weekly applications of a water soluble fertilizer. Your diligence will be rewarded with multitudes of fresh green growth and veritable blankets of flowers. Water when the top two inches of soil is dry when in containers.
A 12 inch hanging basket or patio container is optimal for the 4 ¼ inch pot size plants as they will quickly grow to fill and then spill the container creating a lovely cascading appearance. If choosing to purchase more plants, or getting the 8 inch pot size plants, upsize your container accordingly. Deadheading is not necessary with Supertunias as they will drop their spent flowers. Shearing back in the middle of the season is a good idea if they get leggy or they exceed their bounds. Just trim back up to ⅓ of the plant volume and you will be rewarded with additional branching and even more flowers in a week or two.
Misty Seas Annual Combination Ideas
You are not limited to using containers only for this amazing combination of Supertunias. Mass them in your garden bed or as a landscape border for a super presentation. Choose a full sun location with some light shade if in hotter regions, make sure soil is well draining, water during dry weather and fertilize with a slow release fertilizer when planting, then follow up midsummer
with one more feeding and that should be about all you need to do. Bring home a little reminder of your vacation with these beautiful colors reminiscent of the misty ocean sunrises.
