For an unusual house plant, the Moon Valley Pilea is hard to beat. Also known as the friendship plant or Moon plant, it is botanically named Pilea involucrata. Aptly named for its stunning, neon-green leaves that are richly textured, or moon-like, it will add color and interest wherever it is placed. The Moon Valley Pilea can even flower, producing small creamy white blooms, although it is the foliage that this pilea is grown for.
Best Locations For Growing Moon Valley Pilea
Being non-toxic to humans and pets, the Moon Valley Pilea can be grown in any room as long as it receives the correct light, water, and humidity levels.
Moon Valley Pilea Sunlight Requirements
Moon Valley Pilea thrives when it can receive bright, but indirect light. It can tolerate medium light levels, but make sure it is not placed in strong direct light, which can damage its elaborate foliage. Near an east-facing window seems to be ideal for this plant.
Moon Valley Pilea Care
Originating from Central and South America it is no surprise that the Moon Valley Pilea likes to be kept warm. Preferring a temperature of 68-85°F and high humidity, this plant will benefit from being placed on a wet pebble tray and regular misting. Any dying or dead leaves, misplaced stems, or faded blooms can simply be cut off just above a leaf node using a pair of clean and sharp scissors.
Watering Moon Valley Pilea Plant
The Moon Valley Pilea prefers to be grown in a moist, but free-draining soil. Watering with harvested rainwater is recommended as soon as the top layer of soil begins to dry out. However, this pilea is sensitive to overwatering and once watered, any excess water must be allowed to drain away freely to prevent the roots from sitting in water.
Feeding Moon Valley Pilea Plant
This pilea is not a hungry plant and receives most of the necessary nutrients from the soil. Nevertheless, to promote plant health and encourage lush foliage, feed Moon Valley every month from spring until fall with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half strength.
