Moonglow Slicing Tomato is not only sweet and juicy straight out of the garden, but it is also considered an excellent keeping tomato. That’s right; it can be picked and stored to provide fresh tomatoes well into the winter. Moonglow is considered an heirloom with a taste that is not too acidic or sweet. The uniform fruits are smooth and less prone to cracking than other heirloom varieties. Harvest when Moonglow is fully ripe to eat fresh or when it is just starting to turn from green to store as a keeper through the winter. Moonglow is an indeterminate tomato that keeps producing until the first frost and will produce the first ripe fruit 85 days from transplanting.

Moonglow Slicing Tomato Care

Tomatoes require full sun and well-draining soil. Indeterminate plants can be pruned regularly after the first flowers have formed. Pinch out sucker stems from the main branches to control excess foliage growth. Plant each tomato 16 inches apart on the center, and provide support for the plant to grow up or be tied into. Moonglow Tomato will grow 4 feet or larger and produce better fruit if grown vertically.

Growing Moonglow Slicing Tomato

Plant tomatoes outside when the nighttime temperature is above 50 degrees F. If the leaves begin to turn reddish or purple, that indicates temperatures are still too cold. Use horticultural fleece or clear plastic on low hoops to cover the plants during low temperatures. Tomatoes will recover when the temperature rises.

Tomatoes can be grown inside an unheated greenhouse to allow earlier planting and extend the harvest in the fall. Growing tomatoes is a great option for small gardens. Use at least a 5-gallon container that has excellent drainage. Use a soil-based potting mix with perlite and vermiculite added for drainage and lightness. Fertilize container-grown plants every two weeks with a diluted, liquid tomato food or fish emulsion.

Watering Moonglow Slicing Tomato

Tomatoes like to dry out in between waterings, although plants that are inconsistently watered run the risk of developing fruits with splitting. The soil should feel like a wrung-out sponge at all times. Typically 1 inch of water a week is sufficient. Use a mulch of organic compost or partially rotted straw to help the soil retain moisture longer.

Feeding Moonglow Slicing Tomato

Tomatoes are hungry plants and require a specialized fertilizer with the right amount of macro and micronutrients. A granular, slow-release fertilizer can be mixed into the soil at planting time, or a diluted, liquid feed can be applied every two weeks until fruit begins to form.

Plant Addicts Warranty - 1 Year (Extra Purchase Required)

We encourage all plant lovers to purchase the Plant Addicts Warranty, whether you're a new gardener or an expert. There are many variables outside of anyone's control that can cause a plant to die. The Plant Addicts Warranty is a 1 year warranty protecting you from all of the unknowns and will replace your plant if something were to happen to it.

The warranty is purchased on a per plant basis and must be purchased at the same time as the plant(s). We will cover 100% of the price of the plant, but the warranty does not cover shipping costs. SImply let us know if your plant has died within 1 year of receiving it and we will get you a new one shipped out as soon as possible (depending on the time of the year and availability). We may ask for photos for documentation purposes, but we try to make the process as easy as possible.

Guarantee and Warranty

Plant Shipping

Below are some factors we consider when determining when to ship the plants depending on the timing of the order.

Winter to Early Spring

We ship only when it's warm enough to plant in your growing zone.
Sometimes plants aren't completely ready to sell and ship in early spring. We will wait until the plants are ready before shipping so you don't get a subpar product.
For Southern plants we will be able to ship much earlier than plants coming from our northern nursery.

Summer

If there is extreme heat we may delay shipping for a week or several weeks.
We review what areas the plants are traveling through as well as your location.

Fall into Winter

We’ll ship plants out all the way up to the end of the fall planting season!

Winter

Get your order in early to reserve your plants for Spring planting!

Once your plant is shipped you’ll receive an automated email with tracking information.
