Sweet Alyssum is the quintessential spring to fall annual for your summer time garden. If you have ever walked into a garden and caught a drift of sweet fragrance, chances are there is an alyssum growing close by, and Moonlight Knight does not disappoint. Clouds of pale yellow/white flowers with yellow centers and bright green foliage blanket this low growing annual and are a delight to all your senses. It is a cold and heat tolerant annual that will bloom until hard frost in colder climates.
Enjoying sun to part shade, this versatile flower is a great addition to any cottage garden, container or hanging basket as it spreads out and fills in beautifully. An improvement over its ancestors, Moonlight Knight sweet alyssum is a hybrid that won’t go to seed and stop blooming when the heat is on. Although it grows well in the ground, Moonlight Knight excels in hanging baskets and containers where it is easier to control moisture. Hardy in Zones 9a to 11b, set out in early spring in Zones 3 to 8 to get a jump start on beautiful.
Moonlight Knight Sweet Alyssum Care
A heavy drinker, Moonlight Knight will enjoy regular watering. Keeping it evenly moist, and using a continuous release fertilizer will put this annual in the easy to maintain category. If you miss a watering and it looks wilted, don’t fret, sweet alyssum will bounce back. Pests are not usually a problem for this plant, but if you do get aphids, use a standard household pesticide or insecticidal soap to take care of the problem for you. An average soil pH of 6 to 6.5 is ideal for this flowering annual.
Deadheading is not required for this continuous rebloomer. If your sweet alyssum loves where it is planted and gets a bit unruly, give it a quick shaping with a pair of sharp scissors to keep it within bounds. It will respond with even more flowers, and bees and butterflies will be frequent visitors.
Moonlight Knight Sweet Alyssum Spacing
Growing up to 12 to 24 inches in height with a spread of 12 to 18 inches, this low growing mounding annual will appreciate being spaced about 12 to 18 inches apart and will quickly fill in. Pair it in a hanging basket with trailing vines or in a container with a spike foliar or upright perennial to make a stellar presentation. Its pale moonlight yellow flowers compliment a whole range of companion colors. This is one annual that will be your go-to year after year.
